Wade: Odor's solution comes at a cost

By John Ramsey

The rancid odor in Wade is gone, but the debate over who should pay for the fix remains.

Stagnant sewage in the town’s pipes produced hydrogen sulfide, which created a rotten-egg stench in much of the town for more than a year.

Last month, Cumberland County started pouring a chemical in the pipes that prevents the smelly bacteria from forming in the pipes.

“I really haven’t noticed it all that much since then,” said Shearin McPhail, who lives across from the town’s sewage lift station. McPhail said last month that the smell was strong enough to make him nauseous.

A sewer system for Wade, Godwin and Falcon — called Norcress — was finished in the fall of 2005. Wastewater from Godwin and Falcon converge in Wade.

A lack of customers to flush the pipes means raw sewage sits in them for days at a time, said Tom Cooney, Cumberland County’s public utilities director.

The engineer, Kevin Lindsay of Hobbs, Upchurch & Associates, failed to consider the low usage when designing the project, Cooney said.

Lindsay said he wouldn’t have done anything differently in hindsight. The only design solution would have been installing smaller pipes, and that would restrict the towns’ possibility for future growth, he said. He attributed the odor to a combination of stagnant sewage in the lines and the waste coming from a meat-processing plant in Falcon.

The new chemical additive, which costs about $1,300 a month, has drastically reduced hydrogen sulfide output.

The county believes the Public Works Commission should cover the costs because of a maintenance agreement that calls for PWC to maintain pumping stations and chemicals associated with operation.

The PWC argues that the chemical to stop the stink is not associated with operation.

Legal teams for the county and the PWC are still discussing the issue.

If the county has to pay for the chemicals, which will be added indefinitely, the roughly 500 customers of the Norcress system will likely see about a $2 increase on their monthly bills.

WORLD SMELLS BETTER THAN AT ANY TIME SINCE 1850

Eight of the ten most fragrant years of all time have occurred since 1994, despite a worldwide increase in urine.

In the 500 years following the Black Death the global smell remained consistently awful, a bit like a pair of damp gym socks, rubbed in pork and left inside a sack.

Locals claim factory is source of pollution

ENVIRONMENT Agency chiefs have come under fire for failing to investigate health concerns over pollution fall-out in the Peak.
Residents on Danesway and Burrfields, in Chapel-en-le-Frith want to know exactly what is in tiny airborne particles which they claim have eaten into the paintwork of their cars and damaged window frames.

They have made numerous complaints about the emissions which they believe come from the nearby Federal Mogul factory.

Alan Williams, of Burrfields Road, said: "We are still not satisfied with the explanation from the Environment Agency. No-one has given us yet conclusive evidence that the airborne particles are not dangerous to health.

"We want to know what is in it. As yet Federal Mogul have refused to tell us the contents of the dust because they say it is commercially sensitive information.

"I can accept that, while it remains in the confines of the site, but when it spills out into my garden and front bedroom then it becomes my concern and everybody else's."

Linda Paul, of Danesway, recently bought a new car and within two weeks it was covered with the particles.

Julian Hope, of Burrfields Road, said: "They are damaging our property all the time. If we did that to theirs they would be on it right away."
Another resident highlighted the smell coming from the factory. "I've lived her for over 40
years and it has never been as bad. This past month or so it has just been awful."

Doug Munkman, of the Environment Agency, said: "We are working with Federal Mogul to address the problem of iron-based particles and odour coming from the site.

"Currently the company is installing cyclones to help capture the particles from a vent that is thought to be the cause of the problem and there is an ongoing programme to convert five ovens to reduce the odour issue."

Both High Peak MP Tom Levitt and Cllr Andrew Bingham have been working with residents and Federal Mogul and attended meetings.

Environmental odour problem

The analytic methods could be subdivided into the physical, the gas chromatographical, and the chemosensory method.

When measuring odor, there is a difference between the emission and immission measurements. During the emission measurement, the odor concentration in the air is so high that the so called “Olfaktometer” is needed to thin the assay. Because of this, all measurement methods based on thinning assays are called “olfaktometrical methods.” On the contrary, an “Olfaktormeter” is seldom used during the immission measurement. The same measuring principals are used, but the judgment of the air assay happens without thinning the assay. http://odour.au.com

TAC site clean-up

HYDROCARBONS caused work to stop at Geelong's $80 million TAC relocation site, testing revealed yesterday.

Property developers said soil contaminated with hydrocarbons, a product of crude-oil used in petroleum and other fuel products, were behind fumes and odour at the Brougham St site.

Excavation unearthed the contamination and led to one worker being hospitalised and the state's environmental watchdog to step in.

Workers returned to the site yesterday to start removing the contaminated soil before construction work would continue next week.

Last week site managers stopped work when one worker, already suffering from gastroenteritis, fell ill and the Environmental Protection Authority received complaints of odour from the site.

Project developer FKP Property Group yesterday confirmed the hydrocarbon contamination, which was not expected to cause any lasting health effects.

State executive general manager Jason Smith said the firm had worked with WorkSafe Victoria and the environment watchdog in planning to remove the soil.

``There was an odourous substance discovered in the soil and now our construction management plan has been updated to reflect that,'' he said.

``There will be between three and four days' work to remove the material in a safe manner and then its full-steam-ahead once again.''

Mr Smith said the developers had previously found and removed soil with low-level contamination but the latest chemical substance discovery was more concentrated.

It was understood the contamination came from dumping during a previous period of industry on site.

WorkSafe spokesman Paul Fallon said the site would be monitored to ensure safety.

``We're still working with them to make sure they meet their obligations to the workers and to the public,'' he said.

Last week the environmental watchdog issued developers with a notice to stop on-site odours after receiving several community complaints.

New device rapidly diagnoses gastrointestinal disease by 'reading' the odour of biological fluids

A pioneering new device that could help over four billion adults and children who suffer from infectious diarrhoea in the developing world and reduce outbreaks of diseases such as clostridium difficile (C.Diff) in UK hospital wards is the winner of this year's University of Bristol's New Enterprise Competition.
Dr Chris Probert, Consultant and Reader in Gastroenterology at Bristol University and Professor Norman Ratcliffe at the University of the West of England, developed Odor-Reader, a device able to rapidly diagnose gastrointestinal disease by 'reading' the odour of biological fluids including stool and urine.
Delays in diagnosing gastrointestinal diseases can lead to patients being ill for longer, some may die, many will cost more to treat along with infections spreading to other people. In England and Wales there are over 50,000 cases of C.Diff (the latest 'superbug') each year. The infection prolongs hospitalisation and is associated with high morbidity and mortality as well as costing the NHS around £60 million annually.
The first prize of £15,000 was awarded to the researchers at the University's annual enterprise dinner held tonight [Tuesday 3 July].
The second prize of £5,000 was awarded to a team of researchers from Bristol University's School of Chemistry and Department of Physics (Dr Neil Fox, Dr Gareth Fuge, Chemistry and Dr Suzanne Furkert, Physics) for their device Light Materials Ltd.
Light Materials is a new type of solar energy-to-electricity converter which is cheaper to produce and easier to operate than those currently available. The device will enable systems to generate electricity for homes and businesses. The converter also has the potential to be used in large numbers in concentrated solar power stations, that are beginning to be built in the 'sun belt' countries.
As well as securing the £5,000 prize, Light Materials also won the Timms-Smith Award for best chemistry entry. The Timms-Smith Award, which is supported by BOC Edwards, aims to recognise the achievements of Dr Peter Timms and Bob Smith whose scientific collaborations over many years led to the commercialisation of a gas abatement system for purifying waste gas streams.
Bristol Buggy, a transportation trolley designed by UBHT staff, Jenny Anstead and Peter Smithson, to accommodate a child in full plaster cast after orthopaedic surgery won the £3,000 Best Social Enterprise award.
The undergraduate wild-card prize of £1,000 was awarded to A2B Navigation Solutions, a transport navigation system accessed via mobile phone technology.
Bristol University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eric Thomas, said: "Our annual enterprise dinner showcases the full range of the University's enterprise activities, from entrepreneurship training and support to technology transfer and new company acceleration. I am proud to be able to share our success with our partners from the wider business community."
Dr Neil Bradshaw, Director of Enterprise at the University, said: "It is pleasing to see the high calibre of this year's competition winners. The standard of entries was extremely high and it was a tough decision for our panel of experts."
Two other entries were highly commended, The Petal Collection, an affordable range of organic and herbal beauty care products won £3,000 plus free legal advice worth a further £3,000 from Osborne Clarke. TalkTone, a mandarin self-teaching software system was also highly commended, winning £3,000 and six months rent-free office space in the Bristol SETsquared Acceleration Centre.
Guests attending the prestigious award dinner, sponsored by SPark - the Bristol and Bath science park, saw each finalist present their entry. This year's competition entries were judged by a panel of experts from the sponsoring organisations including Bristol City Council, BOC Edwards, Business West, Deloitte, Fortis Bank, IP Group, STMicroelectronics, Osborne Clarke and United Bristol Healthcare (NHS) Trust.
