Charlton residents rally over abattoir odour, disease fears

A GROUP of residents with concerns about a proposed meat processing facility on the outskirts of Toowoomba is holding a community meeting tonight. FKG Group is planning to build an $80 million abattoir in the Witmack Industrial Park about 10km west of Toowoomba. A development application is before Toowoomba Regional Council. The public notification stage ended on September 22. Speaking on behalf of residents, Chrissie Bach said in their view the development did not belong in its proposed location, which is zoned for medium impact. She said neighbours of the proposed facility were worried about offensive odours and the impact they would have on future development in the Charlton precinct. Ms Bach also raised concerns about alleged health risks. Toowoomba union delegate Chris McGaw and Oakey veterinarian David Pascoe have publicly raised noise, odour and planning concerns about the project. FKG Group manager of property development Dallas Hunter has defended the project saying the state-of-the-art design would ensure that the facility would have little to no impact on nearby residents. "It's just as important for us and our neighbours that we have a low-impact or nil-impact plant and that's what we're designing," he said.

Water authority fined $6K for sewage spill

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has fined Central Highlands Water almost $6,000 for allowing sewage to spill into Lake Daylesford last April.

The spill occurred on Easter Sunday, when alarm systems at a sewer pump station failed to warn of a sewage overflow for about two hours.

The EPA's Wayne Robbins says a large amount of sewage leaked into the lake during that time.

He says the health risks caused by this were significant.

"Well obviously a sewage spill isn't pleasant," he said.

"[There is] visual and odour impact and potentially health risks in terms of E. coli and fecal contamination."

EPA stumped by fish odour problem

The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) says there is nothing it can do to reduce the odour from dead and dying fish at Lake Boga, near Swan Hill in north-west Victoria.

The Swan Hill Rural City Council says it is waiting for advice from the EPA about managing the odour.

But the EPA's acting chairman Bruce Dawson says the only way to remove the odour is to remove the fish, but that is not possible because of their state of decay and because deep mud around the lake is preventing access.

"The sheer scale of the incident up there at the moment and the number of fish that have died means that there isn't any option other than some attempt to remove the fish," he said.

"Unfortunately that hasn't been successful and under the current conditions is unlikely to be successful.

"If the conditions were to change so that access to the water was possible - if the mud was to dry out and harden to enable vehicles to access it, that sort of thing - unfortunately that's probably not going to happen during the time the fish decompose, but we are evaluating that each day."
