dailygleaner.com - Councillor raises a stink over stink | By HEATHER MCLAUGHLIN - Breaking News, New Brunswick, Canada: "A Fredericton city councillor isn't convinced enough is being done to address odour control at the Fredericton Region Solid Waste Commission landfill property on Alison Boulevard.

A worker uses an excavator to stack garbage bales at the Fredericton Region Solid Waste Commission's landfill site recently.
Ward 7 Coun. Scott McConaghy, who represents the Lincoln area, said anyone entering or leaving Fredericton via the Vanier Highway is bound to be hit by the obnoxious odour and he's had numerous complaints from Lincoln Heights and Wilsey Road residents."

Swiss Cheese Model for Odour Pollution in Remediation

-
Odour pollution is one of the most socially disruptive and technically challenging environmental hazards associated with contaminated land remediation. Unlike toxicological risks that may remain latent, malodorous emissions generate immediate community response, regulatory scrutiny, and operational constraints. Managing odour at remediation sites therefore demands a systemic, multi-layered approach to risk mitigation. This chapter examines the Swiss Cheese Model (Reason, 1990) as a framework for understanding how odour pollution events arise during soil and groundwater remediation, and how it can guide the design of robust, redundant defence architectures. Framework The Swiss Cheese Model, developed by James Reason within organisational accident theory , argues that hazardous outcomes rarely result from a single failure. Instead, they occur when latent conditions and active failures align across multiple defensive layers. Each layer is like a slice of Swiss cheese, containing weakn...

Odour Control in Industrial Environments: A Technical Whitepaper

-

Executive Summary Odour management in industrial and commercial facilities represents a critical operational, regulatory, and reputational challenge. Traditional fragrance-based masking approaches provide temporary relief at best, often exacerbating underlying issues and creating secondary nuisance complaints. Modern molecular-neutralization strategies, by contrast, address odours at their source through selective chemical reduction and decomposition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odourous inorganic species. This whitepaper examines the technical foundations of contemporary odour control methodologies, presents a framework for site-specific diagnostics and treatment design, and provides engineers with practical checklists and data requirements for evaluating and implementing effective long-term solutions. The focus is on evidence-based evaluation, scalability, regulatory alignment, and total cost of ownership (TCO) optimization. 1. Introduction: The Odour ...

Addressing the Socio-Environmental Impact of Urban Wastewater Emissions: A Case Study of Whitstable and the Efficacy of Molecular Neutralization

-
Introduction The convergence of rapid urban development and ageing wastewater infrastructure has increasingly created significant environmental and public health challenges for localised communities. A compelling illustration of this issue emerges from the village of Chestfield, near Whitstable, where residents have reported severe physiological and psychological distress due to persistent "horrendous" sewage odours originating from a newly constructed residential estate [1] . This situation highlights the urgent need for advanced, non-invasive environmental remediation strategies that move beyond conventional masking approaches. The Whitstable Case: Infrastructure Under Pressure Evidence from the Whitstable region demonstrates that the olfactory burden from local wastewater systems has escalated to a point where it materially diminishes residents' quality of life. Documented symptoms include acute nausea, vomiting, eye irritation, and chronic sleep disruption [1] . T...
