The facility no one wants to talk about, but everyone uses
Tucked off Beddington Lane in Sutton, the Beddington Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) is not pretty. It’s big, loud, and industrial. It’s also kind of a miracle.
This one state-of-the-art plant treats most of the residual waste — your non-recyclable ‘rubbish’ — collected from households in the four South London Waste Partnership boroughs. We’re talking around 200,000 tonnes a year.
Why share? Because London is too big to go solo
Since 2003, the boroughs of Merton, Sutton, Kingston and Croydon have managed collection collectively via the South London Waste Partnership — harmonising collections for one million residents.

The human part no one puts in the press release
For the driver who does the 5am round in Merton, it means his truck drives straight to Beddington, not 40 miles to a landfill in Kent. For the family in Carshalton, it means questions about emissions and lorries. For the council? Recycling rates have actually fallen since the incinerator became fully operational in 2019.
So what can you actually do?
- Know your bin. Everything you recycle properly never needs to get to Beddington.
- Batteries and vapes out. One lithium battery can shut the whole plant down.
- Food waste in the caddy. It’s the heaviest thing in your black bag.
Next Tuesday, when you hear the truck, think of it. Your bag is joining 200,000 tonnes from four boroughs, on its way to become someone else’s light switch.
